Every year, many beautiful foals are born. At the same time, selling a foal has clearly become less commonplace in recent years.

This is by no means always due to the quality of the foal. Costs in the horse industry are rising, the global economy remains uncertain, import and transport rates are increasing, and the number of (starting) riders is decreasing. As a result, supply currently exceeds demand.

In this market, it is essential as a breeder to present your foal at the right moment and in the best possible way .

Are you going to sell your foal? Then avoid these 5 most common mistakes.

1. Not a good video

Buyers want to see the foal move. A clear video in walk, trot, and canter significantly increases the chances of responses.

2. Poor or unclear photos

The impression determines whether someone looks further. Unclear, dark photos or foals not presented properly in a standing position cause buyers to scroll past immediately.

3. Too little information

Pedigree, dam line, expected height, and temperament are important information for serious buyers. Therefore, be clear and honest in the description of your foal.

A realistic and complete description prevents misunderstandings and saves both you and the buyer a lot of time. The goal is for a foal to be exactly as described in the advertisement during a viewing.

4. Putting the foal online too late

This is one of the biggest missed opportunities.

Many buyers start exploring their options early in the season . Some seize the opportunity immediately when they see a suitable foal. Other buyers prefer to follow a foal for a while to see how it develops.

When a foal only appears online later, many buyers have already made their choice. Being visible early therefore significantly increases the chance of a sale.

5. Not updating the presentation

Foals change quickly. Photos and videos taken shortly after birth often no longer provide a realistic picture after a few months.

That is precisely why it is wise to present a foal multiple times with new photos and video .

Practical tips for a higher chance of selling

Plan a first photo and video shoot when the foal is 3–5 weeks old.

The first buyers start exploring their options early in the season. Some buy immediately when they see a suitable foal. Other buyers follow a foal first to see how it develops.

Those who only become visible late in the season miss a significant part of the market.

Therefore, make your foal visible early with a first photo and video shoot when the foal is 3 to 5 weeks old .
